First-Time Gift Card Seller Checklist: 7 Steps Before You Cash Out

September 27, 2026·4 min read

You've Got the Card — Now What?

You're holding a gift card you know you won't use, and you've decided to turn it into cash instead of letting it gather dust. Smart move. But if you've never sold a gift card before, the process can feel a little murky. What information do you need? How do you prove the balance? Which payout method is fastest?

We've walked thousands of first-time sellers through their first transaction at GC Nexon, and we've noticed the same questions come up again and again. This checklist gives you everything you need to breeze through your first sale with confidence.

Step 1: Confirm Your Card Is Eligible

Not every gift card qualifies for buyback. Before you spend time gathering details, check these basics:

  • Retail brand: We accept major retailers like Amazon, Target, Walmart, Home Depot, and hundreds more. Niche or regional brands may not be supported.
  • Card type: Physical cards and e-gift cards both work. Store credit tied to an account (like a Target Circle balance) usually doesn't.
  • Balance minimum: Most platforms, including ours, require a minimum balance — typically around $10 or $15.
  • Expiration date: Cards that expire within 30 days often aren't accepted, or they may fetch lower rates.

If your card passes these checks, you're good to move forward.

Step 2: Gather the Card Details

You'll need specific information to get a quote and complete the sale. Have these items ready:

  • Card number: Usually 15-19 digits on the back of a physical card or in the email for e-gift cards.
  • PIN or security code: Required for many brands. Scratch off the coating gently if it's covered.
  • Current balance: Check this on the retailer's website or call the number on the back. Don't guess — buyers verify balances before paying out.
  • Purchase receipt (optional but helpful): Some sellers like to have proof of purchase handy, especially for high-value cards.

Snap a clear photo of a physical card if you're submitting it online. Blurry images slow down approval.

Step 3: Get Your Quote

Most buyback sites, including GC Nexon, offer instant quotes based on the retailer and balance. Typical rates range from 50% to 92% of face value, depending on the brand's popularity and resale demand.

Don't be shocked if a niche retailer offers a lower rate than a household name like Amazon or Starbucks. High-demand cards command top-tier rates because they're easier to resell.

If the quote feels low, compare a couple of platforms — but watch out for hidden fees or delayed payouts that eat into your final take-home.

Step 4: Choose Your Payout Method

Speed and convenience matter. Here are the most common options and what to expect:

  • PayPal: Fast, widely accepted, and easy to transfer to your bank. Usually arrives within minutes to a few hours.
  • Cash App or Zelle: Direct bank transfers that hit your account quickly, often same-day.
  • Bitcoin: Popular with sellers who want to skip traditional banking. Transactions can be nearly instant, depending on network speed.
  • Chime: Works like a standard bank transfer if you have a Chime account.

Pick the method you already use. Setting up a new account just for one payout adds unnecessary friction.

Step 5: Submit and Verify

Once you accept the quote, you'll submit your card details through the platform's secure portal. You may also need to verify your identity — usually with an email confirmation or phone number.

After submission, the buyer verifies the balance. This step is automatic for most major retailers and takes just a few seconds. If there's a discrepancy (say, you reported $50 but the balance is $48), you'll get a revised offer or a chance to update the info.

Your transaction gets a unique reference number — for us, it looks like NEXON-XXXXXX-XXXX. Save this in case you need to check status or contact support.

Step 6: Get Paid

If everything checks out, your payout processes. Timing depends on the method you chose:

  • Digital wallets and crypto: Minutes to a few hours.
  • Bank transfers: Same-day to 1 business day.

You'll get a confirmation email with the payout amount and method. If you don't see the funds within the expected window, check your spam folder or contact support with your reference number.

Step 7: Keep Records (Optional but Smart)

If you plan to sell more cards down the road, keep a simple spreadsheet or note with:

  • Card brand and original balance
  • Sale date and reference number
  • Payout amount and method

This helps you track which retailers give you the best return and makes tax reporting easier if you sell cards regularly (yes, large or frequent sales may be taxable income — check with a tax pro if you're unsure).

You're Ready to Sell

Selling your first gift card doesn't have to be complicated. Confirm eligibility, gather the details, pick a payout method, and submit. Within minutes, you'll have cash in hand instead of a card you'll never use.

At GC Nexon, we've streamlined the process so first-timers can complete a sale in under five minutes. No hidden fees, no runaround — just a fair quote and fast payment. Grab that card, follow this checklist, and turn unused plastic into money you can actually spend.
